The 3 major religious characters in history, the Prophet Mohammed, Jesus Christ and Buddha all had one thing in common - they believed in fasting.
After doing a quick search on the website for the National Center of Biotechnology Information (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pcm) under the keyword "fasting", I saw that there were 9154 results. I started reading the clinical studies and was absolutely blown away by the incredible information and conclusions about the benefits of fasting.
Today one of my students referred me to a YouTube video by Jason Fung, world-renowned Nephrologist and Diabetes expert. The video is entitled "Dr. Jason Fung - 'Therapeutic Fasting - Solving the Two-Compartment Problem'" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIuj-oMN-Fk and the information that he presents is a 'must-watch' for anyone trying to lose weight. You can see from the chart from his video above what happens during 30 days of fasting. Initially, the body uses up all the excess carbohydrates stored in the body, especially in the liver, for fuel. Then it switches to using our excess stores of fat as fuel. It does NOT use up protein, a.k.a. muscle, as a source of fuel.
In the table below, you can see that after just 4 days of fasting, the REE - Resting Energy Expenditure or Basal Metabolic Rate increases while the body weight drops. So, unlike calorie reduction diets - which absolutely cause the Basal Metabolic Rate to drop, i.e. slower metabolism - fasting actually causing you to INCREASE YOUR METABOLISM. This has been medically proven.
Everything that we have be 'brainwashed' to believe about cutting calories is all a big lie. As a nutritionist, I have been saying that calorie counting is wrong for the past 14 years and people have outright told me I was wrong and thought I was crazy. Thanks to the scientific community for proving this to be correct. I'm not trying to be boastful, but I really want people to pay attention to this information. If you want to live a long and healthy life, then incorporating fasting into your lifestyle - in one way or another - can be of real benefit. And whatever you do, PLEASE stop counting calories.
